Interview With GOP Senate Candidate Eric Brakey

Sunday afternoon I interviewed Maine GOP Senate candidate Eric Brakey. Eric Brakey has been endorsed by the NRA, Senator Rand Paul, and former congressmen Ron Paul. If Eric Brakey wins his state's nomination for Senate, he will face Senator Angus King. Eric was elected to the Maine State Senate in 2014 after defeating his democratic opponent by almost 20 points. As a State Senator Eric Brakey Has had many legislative victories. He has sponsored successful welfare reform, right to try legislation, and a bill ending the requirement to have a permit for concealed carry.

The stakes are mucher higher in the United States Senate, and all politicians are required to compromise in order to push any of their ideas. I asked him how much he would be willing to compromise, and since it is relevant, how much ideological ground would be give up. He said “I think in Washington D.C. compromise means something very different than what what we would normally think of as compromise in our own daily lives. In Washington D.C. the kinds of compromises that they usually get to is Democrats want to spend more money of welfare programs, Republicans want to spend more money on warfare programs, and so they compromise and spend more money on everything."

He then elaborated on the part of my question where i asked a Liberty Republican like himself to justify voting for the “skinny repeal” of Obamacare but not the Graham-Cassidy Repeal. “I would obviously prefer to repeal the whole thing(referring to Obamacare) and move back in the direction of free markets and competition in our healthcare industry. I am more than happy however to vote for a bill like skinny repeal, which repeals only parts of it. Because that's at least moving us in the right direction. I might not be getting all the cake that I want, but at least i'm getting some of the cake. I’m happy to vote for something like that”. He then went on to clarify his stance on the most recent Republican failure to repeal Obamacare, the Graham-Cassidy bill. “A bill like Graham-Cassidy is a little more complicated, i've kinda come to the point where i would have reluctantly voted for it. I would have voted for it however, because of the important things that would be done their for medicaid reform.”

Since Senator Brakey is a Liberty Republican i found it imperative to get a specific answer on the issue of abortion. Many small government advocates split when it comes to believing in using the government to prevent abortion. He retorted with a very unique stance on pro-life ethics. “I am Pro-Life. For me however, I am someone who operates on the basis of principles, not necessarily issue by issue. I am Pro-Life in principle, and certainly I apply that to the issue of abortion.” he went further, and explained where many Pro-Life movement falls short. “For me being Pro-Life is not just about abortion, being Pro-Life is also why i oppose the death penalty.”

Senator Brakey stated his support for tax cuts, and if he was in the United States Senate I would not be surprised if he was a key holdout on tax reform, pushing for as many tax cuts as possible.

Eric Brakey is among many candidates who, together, have a once in a generation chance to completely reshape the GOP. There are many candidates looking to unseat Republican Incumbents, or looking to defeat their establishment primary opponent, then unseat a democrat.
